Three Fundamental Precautions for Installing Your Water Storage Tank

by Dan Owens

If you are preparing for the purchase of a water tank, you should plan for its installation. In general, these storage tanks are beneficial structures for managing the long-term water expenses for commercial, agricultural and residential setups. A good tank will allow for the collection of rainwater for use, minimising the water bills. Moreover, it could reduce the detrimental effects of local water shortages. Unfortunately, poor installation could compromise the anticipated benefits. Here are crucial tips to keep in mind for proper water tank setup.

Think about Siting

When planning for tank installation, you must think about the most convenient location for the structure. It is important not to assume that any spot will do as long as there is sufficient space for the container. In general, you should think about the source of water for the tank. If you intend to collect rainwater, the unit must be placed in a centralised location for optimal harvesting. If you are planning on pumping from an alternate source, you must evaluate the proximity to both the source and the points of use. It is also advisable to consider other factors, like access for maintenance, risk of contamination and closeness to other structures.

Choose a Base Material

The type of material chosen for the base of the tank will determine the stability of the setup. Ideally, your water tank should be placed on a suitable, level surface. Moreover, the base should be consistent and steady. Concrete is considered the best choice because it provides a compact and flat foundation. It is also a long-lasting material that can withstand stress and harsh conditions. You can improve the strength and resilience of the concrete base using reinforcing material like steel bars or nets. If you are not interested in a steel base, you can choose a loose aggregate material like gravel or sand. However, you should note that stability is difficult to achieve, even with compaction. You can make the foundation more stable by incorporating timber beams or cement strips to retain the base.

Place the Tank Fittings

Finally, you should plan for the placement of the tank fittings. The quality of the installation of elements such as the overflow unit, the valves and lugs will determine the performance and efficiency of the storage container. It is advisable to follow the instructions provided by the water tank manufacturer for the setup of the fittings. This will minimise the risk of damaging the tank or compromising the storage and flow of the stored water supply.
